What is ➡️ Social Consciousness?

Our awareness of the world around us allows us to see issues within our society and the implications of our choices. Every day, we directly or indirectly witness injustices, inequalities, discrimination, poor decisions by politicians, human rights abuses, unsustainable business practices, and even how we treat each other in our communities.

Beyond recognising these issues, we are collectively responsible for addressing them, raising awareness, making informed decisions, and creating a positive ripple effect around us. We all have the potential to make an impact, no matter how small. Empathy, compassion, kindness, and tolerance don't cost a thing! By cultivating social consciousness, we are contributing to a kinder, more just world.

When greed, capitalism, and individualism take over, societal issues are worsened. Once we understand the interconnectedness of individuals within a society and the impact of our actions, building longer tables instead of higher walls becomes easier to practice.

Social consciousness can be built through education. If we inform ourselves about important global issues such as climate change, threats to democracy, rampant military spending, poverty, hunger, the refugee crisis, nuclear weapons, factory farming, water shortages, and pollution, then we are already part of the change.

Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power!

Awareness of the injustices in the world makes us more likely to undertake positive steps to changing them. Engaging in meaningful dialogue, using your vote, and supporting worthy causes are small ways that we can start to bridge gaps in society and foster a greater sense of community.

Responsible citizenship, informed decision-making, and social consciousness help drive progress and create a better world for future generations. They form the foundations of social change, inspiring others along the way. In the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi

"Be the change you wish to see in the world."

How Can I Be More Socially Conscious?

  • Stay informed. Use reliable and trustworthy resources like Better World Info to stay up to date on important issues that matter the most to you.
  • Become a conscious consumer. Do not buy more than what you need. Seek out opportunities to lend or purchase secondhand. Consider wasteful packaging, your carbon footprint, harmful toxins, and the ethical impacts of the products that you buy. Fast fashion, child labour, sweatshops, exploitation, pollution, the shipping industry, and plastic waste are all important reasons to be a more ethical consumer.

  • Join or organise a community cleanup of a local park, river, beach, or hiking trail. These events bring people together, give people a sense of purpose, and help improve the appearance of your community spaces.
  • Support independent, local businesses. This will benefit your local economy, keep high streets open, reduce your carbon footprint, and contribute to a stronger, more diverse community.
  • Small acts of kindness. You can contribute your time, money, skills, expertise - whatever you have to offer. Each small act makes a difference and creates a butterfly effect of more kind deeds. Spending time with an elderly neighbour, helping with garden chores, donating to a charity which is close to your heart, assisting at a community event, improving a public green space, donating no longer needed items, and even a smile and a friendly 'good morning' can shine light on someone's day.
  • Join a demonstration for an issue that concerns you, such as women's rights, support for the LGBTQI+ community, opposing cuts to education, increased pay for public sector workers, anti-war, anti-nuclear weapons, or animal rights. Check out our events section for more ideas.
