Donald Trump – Second Term as U.S. President

Voted in for a second term, Trump managed to win all 7 swing states, and gain a majority in both the Senate and the House. The number one reason Trump voters gave were his promises on the economy which he emphasised relentlessly during his campaign. His political comeback involved surviving an assassination attempt, avoiding conviction for a 34-count felony charge, and receiving record funding with $522 million donated into GOP superPACs. His previous presidency was marked with controversy, deregulation, and straining international cooperation. Stay tuned for updates and critical analysis.

Project 2025 - Agenda for Trump's Second Term

This hard-right governing blueprint initiated by Donald Trump aims to reshape the infrastructural and technological landscape of the US by 2025. It has been criticised for its lack of transparency, and failure to address challenges such as climate change and weak economic performance. The project is largely based on deregulation which will have huge implications on public safety, human rights, and sustainability. Major concerns include plans to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education, dismantle the civil service system, and continue to push for sweeping restrictions on abortions.

Wealth Taxes for a Fairer America - Calls for a U.S. Wealth Tax

As corporate profits and billionaire wealth surges families are struggling to pay bills, Americans have watched for decades as the rich become richer and the poor become poorer. Thanks to a tax code that favours income from wealth as opposed to income from work billionaires pay a smaller tax rate than most teachers and retail workers. In 2021, the wealthiest 400 billionaire families paid an average tax rate of 8%, whilst the average American taxpayer in the same year paid 13%. People are calling for a billionaire wealth tax to help end poverty, injustice, and inequality. It is estimated that a wealth tax on US multi-millionaires and billionaires could generate $664 billion every year!

Prosecution of Donald Trump in Georgia – August 2023

Donald Trump and 18 allies have now been indicted in Georgia for election meddling in the attempt to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election. Prosecutors accused Trump of criminal enterprise to remain in power. The indictment was over 100 pages and detailed attempts to persuade Georgia lawmakers to ignore the will of their voters. It described criminal racketeering, the harassment of an election worker, and the beseeching of Georgia’s Republican secretary of state.

USA National Debt Crisis 2023

Back in January, U.S. national debt reached $31.4 trillion. When the Treasury Department spends the maximum amount or hits the debt ceiling, this key flow of money into the government is stopped. Congress is forced to vote on either suspending or raising the limit on borrowing. If Congress cannot reach an agreement by June 1st, the debt will default. Economists are warning of dire consequences which could send the country into recession, crash global stock markets, create global instability, and affect the livelihoods of all Americans.

Pentagon Leaks 2023

Labelled the biggest U.S. national security breach in years, the leak primary consists of classified documents regarding the Russian war. Fears are mounting over the diplomatic fallout, including whether the information may prove valuable to Russia, if the U.S. can be trusted with such high-level intel, and over apparent U.S. spying on its allies. Jack Teixeira, a technology staffer with the Massachusetts Air National Guard is currently under investigation for violations of the Espionage Act.

US Abortion debate – Roe v. Wade

Back in 1973 a landmark court ruling legalised abortion in the US. Named Roe v. Wade, the law gave women the right to choose, and removed government restrictions. However, following months of increasing restrictions in various states, a leaked draft discovered by Politico revealed that the Supreme Court is prepared to overturn the ruling. Increased politicisation in the conservative majority court is facing a backlash from human rights lawyers and women's activists who are questioning the reputation of the court. If it passes, individual states may choose whether access is available of not.

Tax, Tax Dodging & Tax Cuts

The U.S. tax system suffers from unfairness and a lack of enforcement. With lower and middle income earners paying a greater share of taxes, this causes a large tax gap and an unfair burden. Meanwhile, many corporations are known to take advantage and pay very little or no tax. Tax breaks also favor the wealthy and those who have large investments. Tax loop holes for the rich exist in Delaware and South Dakota. Discover more about the world of tax cuts, scams, havens, and tax dodgers in the U.S.

Labour Unions

Organised labour is having a moment in the US with a wave of new unions being created at giants like Amazon and Starbucks. The pandemic made workers tired of being praised one day and treated as expendable the next. Many professions became indispensable, but the pay for their work did not. Many experts see a promising time to fight for better working conditions, but companies are fighting fiercely against unionisation.

Texas School Shooting 2022

May 24 2022 saw the third deadliest American school shooting. 19 students and 2 teachers were fatally shot at Robb Elementary School, Texas. It was the 27th U.S. school shooting of the year. The U.S. has now surpassed 200 mass shootings for the year. The total lack of gun regulations allowed Salvador Ramos to purchase two rifles days before. Gun culture, violence, and political inaction keep allowing these devastating events to happen.

Take Action!

In response to the growing assault by GOP legislators across the United States, who have introduced hundreds of anti-voting rights bills, Senate Democrats introduced the Voting Freedom Act last September. This new bill, which replaces the For the People Act, includes broader and more inclusive actions to strengthen voting rights. To pass, Democrats will need 60 votes to overcome the filibuster.

Build Back Better

The US budget legislation currently hangs in the balance as representatives fail to reach an agreement.  In August, the Senate passed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure package, after which the House and Senate should have consolidated a final bill for President Biden to sign. The bipartisan budget is to fund public investment in infrastructure. The other - a reconciliation bill - is an initiative of Senator Sanders that envisions a massive progressive expansion of social spending. House progressives will not support the bipartisan plan unless it includes the second bill. In early October, the Senate reached an agreement to keep the government open until 3 December through a temporary budget.

U.S. - China Cold War & Military Build-up

Escalating competition and tensions between the USA and China is being labelled the new Cold War. The relationship has deteriorated between the two military and technology giants over recent years. China’s global influence has ballooned, seen as a huge threat by the US. Not to mention suppression of workers' rights at home, and repression in Tibet, Hong Kong, Taiwan and of the Uighur people. With advances in nuclear technology and AI from both sides, the threat of conflict is very real, and of huge global significance.

Dedicating his life to defending civil and human rights, Clark was an outspoken activist against racism and the death penalty. The former attorney general turned pro-bono law practitioner was deeply critical of US policy – he will be missed by the progressive legal community who have lost their statesman.

Biden-Harris

Many were relieved when the major media organizations announced the Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the 46th presidential election. US Senator Kamala Harris will be his vice-president, becoming the first woman and African-American in this position. The two face the difficult task of bringing a deeply divided America back together and fighting the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The outgoing President Donald Trump, meanwhile, denies his defeat and hides in his office.
